Memory 75

Memory: "Training" with the Shadow Academy.
Received: Day 286, late morning
Form: A 'cootie catcher'. One use.
Summary: In which the Shadow Academy, trying to turn the young jedi knights into dark jedi, holds a "training" exercise blindfolding the kids and telling them to protect themselves from a barrage of rocks and knives and things, apparently willing to take it to the twins' deaths.

Jaina, Jacen and wookie Lowbacca, as kids, have been kidnapped by the evil Shadow Academy, a space station. They've been kept under tight guard, separated and not allowed to move around much. But today, the instructors have brought the kids together for an exercise. The academy's instructors are Brakiss, a very pretty man, and Tamith Kai, a Nightsister of Dathomir.

Brakiss is telling them to move the kids forward in their training, the academy has designed exercises that present progressively greater challenges. For this one, all three must work together to accomplish their goal. "There are times when we must be unified to provide appropriate service to the Second Imperium. Little translator droid Em Teedee, hanging on Lowie's belt -- and reprogrammed by the academy to love the Empire -- heartily seconds this, and is miffed when Lowie tells it to be quiet.

They're led into a small room with a bunch of obvious round hatches built into the walls. Tamith Kai activates part of it, and four of Star Wars' little round floating remotes that fire lasers come out. Lowie's supposed to use them to protect the twins. The hatches in the walls will open at random and hurl objects at them. Brakiss gives the twins a polished wooden stick the length of their forearms. "These are your only weapons: these sticks -- and the Force. If the Force is your ally, you have a powerful weapon." Jaina snaps that they already know that, and Brakiss doesn't care. "Then you won't object to the other restrictions we place on you. You'll be blindfolded. You must use the Force to detect the objects coming at you. When the objects fly at you, you must either nudge them aside with the Force or strike them with the wooden sticks. That is all. A simple enough game."

Lowie will be safe in an observation chamber. He's to shoot the remote's lasers to disintegrate projectiles. But of course, that means serious injury will occur in the case of friendly fire. There will be three levels to the test: hard balls that will simply sting but cause no permanent damage, then rocks, then knives.

Jacen: Glad you have such faith in our abilities.
Brakiss: I will be greatly disappointed if you are both killed.
Jacen: Hey, so will we.
Jaina: I think he'll get over it before we will.

The blindfolds are put on, and everyone but the twins leave the room.

Jacen: You ready for this, Jaina?
Jaina: What kind of question is that? . . . Might be better if we stand back-to-back, cover each other as much as we can.

They do it, and wait until there's a grinding sound, the portholes opening. They're reaching out with Force senses to try figuring out where the projectiles will be coming from, but they aren't really ready for it. Both twins get hit despite swinging blindly. They can hear the remotes firing, but Lowie's missing at first, too. He's not blinded, so he starts hitting the balls before the kids get their senses coordinated.

The twins know Brakiss want them to use anger as an easy way to get through this, and getting hit by these stinging balls certainly makes it tempting. But Luke's taught them well. Jaina gets the hang of it first, smacking a ball out of the air. Jacen manages to use telekinesis to nudge a ball off course and into a wall.

Narrative specifically says Jaina performs better as the speed of the projectiles picks up. And then sharp stones hit them. For kids that haven't been through something like this before, they keep their feet well. For a while. Jacen's driven to his knees and only able to use one arm, with both of them fairly battered by the time it starts launching knives. It's a few more intense moments, before suddenly power is cut from the room.

Lowie is a computer genius and by putting the wookie at the controls, he had the opportunity to slice into the system and shut down the whole thing.

Stormtroopers lift the twins to their feet and take them to the instructors and Lowie, where Brakiss praises them.

Brakiss: A very good test. You young Jedi Knights continue to impress me. Master Skywalker must be doing a good job selecting his candidates.
Jaina: Better candidates than you'll ever get.
Brakiss: Indeed. That's why we decided to take some of those that he has already selected. You three were only the first we obtained from the Jedi academy. You've shown such potentential that we are now ready to kidnap another group from Yavin 4. From there, we'll have all the Jedi students we could possibly use.
