Jaina, Jag and Zekk are flying over to the new Jedi academy on Ossus. They've been hunting for rogue dark jedi Alema Rar. But even as they're flying over the pretty mountainous/foresty landscape, there's something wrong. There doesn't appear to be any people moving around outside. Jaina considers the possibility everyone is taking time to mourn Mara Jade. She could use some time to come to terms with her aunt's death, as well. Jag asks the two jedi if they sense anything. Zekk says nothing, and maybe regardless of vector readings she fled somewhere else, and it seems weird that she'd come to Ossus. Jaina suggests they're crazier than she is if they waste time trying to figure out why Alema Rar does anything. Jag chuckles, and she suspects it's mostly because she disagreed with his romantic rival. She and Zekk do agree they need more time to try getting a feel for if she's around. Jaina says even if it takes a ridiculous amount of time, she'd bet her shirt her instinct that Alema is there is right.
The two boys take that bet stupidly quickly. Jaina snaps at them as they get into an argument about who gets the bet. Jag reports he's getting questions from the academy's flight control, so they may have to wrap it up. He's told them it's a security sweep, and Jaina jokes to tell him they're bird watching. He does, and reports getting told to watch for "magnificent" gokobs -- rodents -- and they talk a little about wildlife on Ossus. Eventually they do find Alema's landing site, but no ship or other signs. Jaina and Zekk finally catch the sense of something trying to obscure its presence in the force -- it's Alema's ship, itself a conscious entity. They argue about what to do next; Jaina wants to scare her off so the dark jedi can't be around to pose a threat to the kids at the academy, while the other two figure she's too volatile and might actively go after the kids for them forcing her hand. They finally settle on trying to trap her on Ossus for a final confrontation.
Jag and Zekk get into a pissing contest about who's going to make the next move, and Jaina tells them off for posturing. They settle on Zekk taking an X-wing down to continue searching. Jaina starts getting danger sense tingles. Flight control pesters them to come in for a landing, and the operator stresses her joke about gokobs.
They finally realize it's a warning. There's "over friendly vermin" waiting for them.
Disembarking, Jaina heads for the people she can sense, but there's another Force danger warning. She and Jag find themselves exchanging stun bolts with flight controllers, with the one they'd been talking to shouting that it's a misunderstanding. Once they're subdued enough for the two to demand answers, a major enters. Serpa is a Galactic Alliance Guard man, and he's claiming he's been assigned to protect the academy from terrorists. Jaina doesn't bother with pretenses: Jacen has assigned the Guard there to hold the academy hostage. Serpa demands the pair's weapons. They end up in a standoff.
Jaina probes him with the Force and realizes Serpa is excited; he's insane, and she announces it. Serpa simply draws his blaster and shoots the extra Jag had been restraining in the head, announcing he'll kill anyone to accomplish his goal. Jaina tells him he wouldn't want them to disarm if he knew why they were there -- to apprehend Alema. Serpa suggests going bad is just what Jedi do. They successfully get sidetracked a moment, confirming based on star locations that Alema was likely involved in Mara's murder, but probably wasn't the actual killer. Serpa still wants them to surrender, though.
He orders his men to give him reports in case the dark jedi has snuck in anyway. While he gets his reports, the flight controller explains there's only the married Solusars there as Jedi Masters and half a dozen fresh Jedi to watch after the students. He does't think Alema is around, and he threatens the kids if Jaina and Jag don't surrender. The Solusars and six fresh Jedi aren't enough to defend all the kids, so they do surrender. She does send to Zekk in the Force that he should abandon the search for Alema, but stay hidden. Unfortuantely, Alema picks this up and flees the planet, as Zekk was coming close; Jaina can feel his frustration at the failure.
For the next two weeks, Jaina is confined to a dorm room with kids, trying to keep them in good shape. Jag is taking care of the teenagers. Zekk manages to keep them up to date: the Jedi have "defected" from the Galactic Alliance. She starts having significant dreams: Ben is warning her to be ready, there's something he feels guilty about, and she gets images of things including Ben running Zekk through. And to watch out for kids. Eventually the academy is able to resume quiet classes.
Finally, the routine is broken. Someone is whispering in the hall, trying to slip into her room. She realizes they're pumping coma gas in, so she extends through the Force and telekinetically bangs the guy working on spraying gas around until he's unconscious. She forces the door for fresh air. The kids have already been herded out. Jaina gives the trooper she knocked out a dose of his own gas, takes his commlink and pulls out a shiv she's been making out of a spoon since she had to surrender her weapons. The trooper's partner comes to find him, and she throws the shiv, using the Force to guide it into the trooper's throat. He's going to die; she finds his medkit and gives him a shot of painkiller, apologizing and saying she's got kids to look after. Besides, Uncle Luke has been telling her not to hold grudges. She collects his blaster and power packs, and looks outside to see GAG assembling the kids with a squad of guards around them. Jaina takes a moment to check on where Zekk and Jag are.
None of the adults reveal themselves while Serpa arranges the kids and soldiers. But then Serpa starts picking kids out, one from each age group. By the end of it, Jaina's old instructor Tionne Solusar has revealed herself, demanding an explanation. She had to kill a trooper attempting to gas her, too. Serpa says they were trying to keep the Jedi out of the way and says they're afraid of battle. Tionne tells him to return the kids to their dorms and his actions will be forgiven, and he announces that was a threat.
Serpa shoots out one of Tionne's knees -- though a master, she's more historian than combatant. The others stay hidden, but Jaina's had enough. Jag meets up with her and there's some frustrated banter about how people aren't supposed to be able to sneak up on Jaina. He reports two of the fresh Jedi Knights have been killed by snipers. Jaina decides to go for the snipers first. She sneaks up on a pair hiding and covering the dorms she's supposed to be in. She snaps the neck of one, and uses the force to enhance her strength crushing the throat of the sniper's spotter before snapping his neck as well.
Another blaster shot: Serpa has shot another of Tionne's limbs. Jaina can sense that her companions won't be able to wait much longer for snipers to be cleared. She grabs the sniper rifle and force-leaps to the next team. The sniper has found Kam Solusar and two more of the fresh knights, and gets three shots into him before Jaina kills them. Jag finally catches up to her and pulls her down, scolding her for staying open to get sniped, herself. She sees that by now, Serpa has entirely blasted off Tionne's arm and leg. Serpa checks over the comm who's down. Jaina, Jag and Zekk are the only ones still in a position to act. Jag appropriates the second sniper rifle.
The soldiers realize some of the snipers are down. Serpa addresses Jaina directly on the comm, calling her a coward and asking if she'll hide while he kills Tionne. The master uses the Force to turn the blaster aside and tries to tell Jaina to ignore him, and ends up getting more of her limb burned off with another shot.
Jag starts giving cover fire while Jaina slides down the roof, sniping while she goes because Force and Jedi okay. Once she's close enough, she shouts at the kids to enact an escape plan that's been rehearsed with them. The kids turn on the soldiers, throwing them into each other with telekinesis and stealing weapons. She checks that all the snipers are down, then signals for Jag to continue covering her. When she finally finds Serpa again, he's holding a red-haired girl hostage; Jaina throws his coward insult back in his face. According to Serpa, hiding behind Jedi children is completely different than hiding behind children. Serpa won't face a trial for his actions, either, he's just following orders. He moves to shoot Jaina, but Zekk breaks stealth to cut of Serpa's arm. Zekk neatly knocks him out.
