Memory 85

Memory: Jaina, immobilized as she heals, feels guilty about Allana's apparent death--then meets her new "sister."
Received: Day 328, morning
Form: Basket of flowers. Pluck petals to receive the memory (seven uses).
Summary: It sucks when you're immobilized for weeks, you've killed your wundertwin, the new galactic ruler is literally the worst pick possible, your not-boyfriend is MIA, and you failed to save your niece. At least you have a shiny new sister!

Jaina is stuck in a medical room, literally suspended mid-air while bacta swirls around her. There's a curtain draped around it to preserve her modesty, which is lucky since her parents are coming in. They're happy, even if Jaina's just been dwelling on the fact that she found out as she killed Jacen that he was trying to save Allana's life. Instead, they're both dead.

Han: Hey, kid. Good to see you up.
Jaina: This isn't really 'up,' Dad. Unless you're comparing it with what'll happen if there's a power failure.
Leia: At least you're out of the tank. Now we can actually talk instead of just smiling and waving.
Jaina: Smiling and waving wasn't so bad. It was good to know you were out there. ... But I do have a lot of questions.

Turns out the search for Zekk after he got shot down in the last fight has been inconclusive -- no one can tell if any of the space debris is from his fighter, his rescue beacon isn't active and no one can find him in the Force.

But mandalorian brosis Mirta Gev sends Jaina her thanks for what Jaina's done. Mirta is healing and married Ghes Orade -- but neither she nor her grandfather Boba Fett can ever return to Mandalore, because schemers from the Imperial Remnant have spread a nanokiller keyed to their genetics in the planet's atmosphere. The Solos agree it's justice for Fett, but it's not poetic -- and Jaina particularly sympathizes with Mirta.

Jag will visit soon, but he's busy with a peace conference. The war's official over. Leia brings up a vidscreen showing the installation of former insane Imperial Admiral Daala as the new Galactic Alliance chief of state.

Jaina: Daala? . . . Very funny, guys, but I'm not really in the mood for practical jokes.
Han: No joke, kid. That's the only hitch with the peace deal. Bwua'tu wouldn't take the job -- said he's an admiral, not a liar --
Leia: What he actually said was that he didn't think he was cunning enough to last in the job. And then he recommended Admiral Daala instead.
Han: I think the old goat's got a thing for her.
Leia (exasperated): The admiral's feelings are speculation, of course, but Daala turned out to be the only universally acceptable choice.

Jaina very much doubts that Daala is universally acceptable, and will especially have a vendetta against the Jedi. Her predictions here that Daala is the absolute worst pick will be immediately confirmed in the next storyline. But right now, she's being informed that the Imperial Remnant is being forced to catch up with the times and start having legitimate female rulers. Han urges Jaina to give Daala a chance, and they listen to her speech.

What can I add that has not already been said here today? If this war has taught us anything, it is that we all lose when we fight. My friends, the time has come to try a new way -- (break for a minute of applause) -- The way of cooperation, so that we can all win together. (more applause) My friends, it is my promise to you here today that sometime in the not-too-distant future, we will live in a galaxy where our space navies exist to better our societies, not defend them-where we won't need Jedi to sort out our differences and mete out justice, because we will be living under a government that is just.

As Jaina watches the applause again, she considers a new angle on the events her brother's trip down the dark side: he was conquering the galaxy with the apparent goal of uniting it. Well, he sacrificed his name, his family, his reputation and his life . . . and maybe he'd won after all. Everyone united under Daala.

Han recognizes her discomfort, and assures her Daala isn't scary. She finally brings up what's been gnawing on her -- how Jacen stopped fighting to warn Tenel Ka about the assassination attempt. How she thinks he shed his dark side persona and became himself again just as she killed him. Leia reminds her that if she'd hesitated, he would have killed her instead, but Jaina's latched onto it being her fault Tenel Ka couldn't act in time to save Allana.

The parents hesitate. ABOUT THAT.

Leia calls in "Amelia."

Han: A war orphan. Turns out the kid's Force-sensitive. Your mother and I are going to be acting as guardians while she's at the Jedi academy.
Jaina (suspicious): An orphan?
Leia: That's how it was explained to us. But it's possible the mother just felt the Jedi academy would be a safer environment than she was able to provide.
(Allana comes in)
Allana: Hello, Jaina. They tell me we're going to be sisters now.
Jaina (relieved): I guess we are, Amelia. Welcome to the family.
