Memory 86
Memory: The defense of Mon Calamari.

Summary: Big giant space battle, with Jaina leading a squadron of X-wings as the Yuuzhan Vong attempt taking Mon Calamari.
Han, Leia and Jaina are headed to a military briefing headed by bothan Admiral Kre'Fey on an expected Yuuzhan Vong armada strike at Mon Calamari. The water world is current capital of the Galactic Alliance. There's a lot of high-ranking officers in the briefing with them, including Imperial Remnant's Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon.
Intelligence shows the Vong intends to attack with five thousand ships -- a completely overwhelming force. The alliance doesn't stand a chance without being clever and without enemy blunders. The old tacticians figure they can also shake up strategy: the Vong have generally been able to count on overwhelming force causing their enemies to scatter and fall back, then wear down the enemy as they try holding more and more space. They can't afford to do that with Mon Calamari anyway. Instead, they're planning to split forces up to stage a counterattack on Coruscant, which would force Vong plans off track.
For those just tuning in to the Yuuzhan Vong war, the Vong rely on biotech, with ships that resemble coral structures. They're apparently dead to the Force, which means Jedi lose their advantage in picking up Vong attacks on their danger senses -- generally, they are the most unpleasant enemies Jaina's ever had.
Kre'fey displays a hologram of the city-world that was once capital of the New Republic. The city is being swallowed into something like a jungle, results of Vong terraforming. There's debate about whether or not Coruscant is restorable at this point -- its orbit and rotation have even been altered. But the Kre'fey thinks it can be taken back, and it's the key to finishing the war. Kre'fey calls it a crusade, which is terribly accurate for him -- the bothans have been wanting to genocide the Vong since the death of their leader on Coruscant.
Reports are the Vong attack on Mon Calamari will have the enemy ships deployed in a giant shape like a tentacled beast -- a yammosk, the genetically engineered creature the species uses to coordinate the forces. Kre'fey highlights areas the strategists feel are key to disrupt with hit-and-run attacks, and open up firing lanes for heavier ships to hit the center. Meanwhile, couriers run for the other half of the fleet and tell them to attack Coruscant. They're trusting the Vong to take a bunch of forces back there, and then it becomes a fight at Mon Calamari to keep the enemy from withdrawing and providing reinforcements.
--
Jaina's out with her squadron, Twin Suns. When the Vong armada comes out of hyperspace, intelligence proves right -- the enemy is deployed as a yammosk. Seeing how many ships there are is a lot more staggering than just hearing the number in a briefing. The enemy hits a minefield, but only minimal damage is inflicted before they counter it, sucking the mines into little black holes the Vong ships generate as defenses. Jaina calls in the arrival and mine detonations, then sends in the armada's course. New orders are for Twin Suns to rendezvous with Vanguard, Scimitar and Rogue squadrons. She takes her pilots on three of these jumps tracking the enemy movement toward the Mon Cal system.
Jaina takes a few moments granted by the hyperspace jump to center herself in the Force and think once more about her important people, though she deliberately chooses not to reach out for them in the Force -- and she notes no other Jedi are reaching out to check up on her. She takes her pilots to rally with the rest of the fleet in actual Mon Calamari space, and she notes with Rogue leader Gavin Darklighter that she thinks intelligence underestimated the number of enemy ships.
The Vong arrive, and the comms go silent for a few moments before bursting with chatter as the fighting begins. The alliance launches its first trick: unmanned ships barrel at the armada, eating up enemy projectiles and launching thousands of probe droids programmed with a variation of a trick Jaina used earlier in the war -- they're mimicking propulsion signatures of alliance starfighters, and since Vong ships rely on sensors without visuals, they're certain they need to destroy a whole lot of enemy fighters. And the probes are drawing enemy forces out of position for the real attack.
The starfighters, Jaina's squadron included, attack, causing as much chaos as they can until the order comes to go cover alliance capital ships while they begin laying down the heavy fire. The Vong decide not to take it laying down, and things get messy -- plasma hits Jaina's fighter, nearly blowing her shields and half-roasting her ship. Her astronavigation droid melts.
And then the Vong yammosks reposition the enemy tentacles, and instead of facing the six wounded enemy ships Jaina had been tangling with, she's against thirty fresh enemies. Great. Her pilots are running out of room to maneuver, and soon enough one of her X-wing's lasers gets blown off. The alliance capital ships no longer have viable firing lanes without risking hitting their own starfighters in the mess. Jaina has to fiddle with her equipment to get it working right again before she can clear up static and get an order for fighter squadrons to withdraw. She's bitter -- there's a lot of fighters in worse shape than hers, and they're unlikely to be able to MAKE a retreat.
Enemy black hole defenses are too concentrated on the front, so the capital ships are trying to flank. Pilots are to withdraw and rally. Chiss Imperial fighters, led by Jagged Fel, help break up the enemy keeping alliance fighters from disengaging. That's when the enemy armada begins shifting its deployment again, fighters returning to their carriers. The report over the comm is the defenders are preparing for a possible microjump the rest of the way to Mon Calamari; planetary defenses are primed and squadrons are to regroup and await coordinates. Jaina's stuck waiting in her crippled ship, anxious, as enemy ships disappear into hyperspace and she waits for orders. Finally: the Vong have split up, some going to a nearby trade route, with the primary group still inbound.
The alliance's Second and Third Fleets reposition at Mon Eron, with Imperial remnant forces moving to back them up -- and Tenel Ka has her Hapan fleets coming to back up forces Mon Calamari itself. The fighting is heavy going -- and then the armada prepares for another hyperspace jump. Orders come in to prepare again for a jump toward Mon Calamari. . . but this time the controller eventually announces the confirmed vector has the Vong armada returning to the galaxy's Core.
The enemy is going back to Coruscant. The attempt to keep them occupied and prevent reinforcements against the attack there has failed.
