Memory 33
Memory: Hugging Ben and scolding him for getting separated from his backup.
Received: Day 141, evening.
Form: In the form of a thaumatrope that has a cage on one side and a rose on the other. Flip it to view your memory; 4/5 uses.
Summary: Jaina, finally getting back in full swing after her first duel with Caedus, wraps up a practice session and reunites with teenage cousin Ben. Oh also some Hapan lady moves in on one of Jaina's not-boyfriends.
--
Jaina's in her first serious training session since she was injured in her first duel against Caedus. It's the first time healer Cilghal is letting her go all-out; she handily takes out three Jedi (not-boyfriend Zekk, wookie Lowbacca, and barabel Tesar) and not-boyfriend Jagged Fel. They're substituting electrostaves for lightsabers so no one gets their limbs cut off (which is just as well because she kicks Jag across the room and he falls on his own weapon). They tease.
Jaina: You didn't have to shock yourself. You could have just said stop.
Jag: I'm not so sure. You had that wild look in your eye again.
Jaina: You four want to go again? Maybe we could get Master Durron to help out.
Cilghal tells her to wrap it up though; Jaina's wounds aren't bothering her anymore, but she's technically not healed either, and should try not to reopen her wounds. Jaina points out the longer she takes to heal, the more time Caedus has to recuperate, too.
Tesar: Then perhaps someone else should harry the prey a bit while you recover. This one would love to take over the hunt.
Jaina: No offense, Tesar, but if I'm not ready, how come you're the one on the ground?
Tesar: [laughs, reptilian tail slapping the ground] No offenssse! Truly funny!
Jaina agrees it's no use pushing herself too hard. Physical training is over -- time to work on the Shatterpoint Technique, which she'd seen Caedus bust out in their fight and wants to have to make sure they're on even ground. The four she'd been training with take up various materials for her to practice on: a five-centimeter thick wood slab, stormtrooper's armor, a panel of hull plating, and a disk of lightsaber- resistant metal.
She actuallysaw how the Force bound its cells together, how they were organized into long lines that gave the wood its grain, and exactly where that grain could be split. Then she simply let her hand slide out and do it, let her fingertips touch the place she had seen. At once, she felt the Force shooting through her hand as it rushed into that weak spot, shattering the bonds that had held the slab together.
The homogoni did not just split, it shattered, and Jag was left holding two tiny fragments with a pile of slivers at his feet.
"Nice job," he said.
Jaina had already turned to the panel in Zekk's hands, a plastoid breastplate that had been taken from a captured stormtrooper. She saw the plastoid as she had seen the homogoni, but now there was no true grain, just layer after layer of polymers crossing in every conceivable direction, with one spot where the layers were particularly thin. She let her hand slide out again. The breastplate fragmented into a dozen pieces and clattered to the grass at Zekk's feet. Next, Jaina turned to Tesar and let her hand slide out to touch the small square of hfredium hull plate he was holding. The square parted into triangles and fluttered out of the Barabel's hands.
Finally, she turned to Lowbacca, who was holding a disk of raw beskar.Luke had arranged to buy the disk from one of the arms dealers that the Mandalorians were now quite freely supplying with the stuff. She almost hesitated, but forced herself not to think, to just see and do, and before she knew it her hand was shooting out toward the heart of a spiral of carefully worked metal crystals.
And the disk crumbled, just as Roegr's breastplate had when Caedus had tapped it with the pommel of his lightsaber.
Han boasts about his daughter, and Leia banters with him briefly. That's when Ben, accompanied by two Hapan secret agent ladies, arrives on the scene. Jaina's overjoyed to see her teen cousin, grabs him in a hug, picks him up and swings him around.
Jaina: Don't you ever do that again!
Ben: Do what?
Jaina: Move away from your backup. What were you thinking?
She gets distracted momentarily by the Hapan ladies -- she realizes they are twin nobles related to Tenel Ka.
Ben: …not to get you and Aunt Leia captured, too. That's the protocol for a situation like the one we were in at Monument Plaza, and it was the right thing to do.
Leia: Yes, it was. Welcome back. And please forgive Jaina. She was just worried about you. We all were.
Ben: Thanks, Aunt Leia. I'm a Jedi, Jaina, with a job to do, just like you. If we're going to keep working together, you're going to have to remember that -- okay?
Jaina: Yeah, sure, Ben. Sorry. [glancing at the Hapans] What have you two been feeding him?
Hapan1: Don't blame us if you can't handle your men. All we did was deliver him to Her Majesty, as ordered.
Ben finally greets his dad, saying he's glad Luke doesn't treat him like a kid. They hug, and Jaina is momentarily surprised at how much Ben's grown lately. Ben mentions there was a problem with his escape. One of the Hapans says Tenel Ka will be there soon to explain; in the meantime, she's going to hit on Zekk, who's confused a moment but ultimately decides to go along with it. If Jaina doesn't mind.
Hapan: He's yours?
Jaina: Well, n-no. Of course he's not mine. We don't --
Hapan: Well then. Lucky me.
Hapan2: We're supposed to be on duty, Taryn.
Taryn: Don't be such a Dug, Trista. I can have fun and do my duty.
Then Tenel Ka arrives and we go to this memory.
