Memory 63
Memory: Lightsaber training gone wrong.
Received: Day 242, evening
Form: A bunch of ripe cherries. 2/3
Summary: The first afternoon of live saber training and someone gets an arm chopped off and blown up. I suppose that's better than it could have gone.

The young Jedi trainees meet Luke in a clearing of Yavin IV's jungle. The humans are wearing flight suits, Tenel Ka's sticking to her Dathomir armor and Lowie's still a wookie and just wearing a belt. No really they actually make a point of this.
Luke's got a ~mysterious pack~ and Jacen wants to know what's in it. He takes out remotes -- little softball-like drones the float around and shoot lasers. Jaina identifies them. Luke jokes they're going to be doing some target practice -- with the drones shooting at the kids. The idea is to deflect the shots with their sabers, and they'll be wearing special visors that do a little optical illusion to hide the remotes without keeping the kids from seeing each other so they don't accidentally slice each other up. Luke points out that's not as bad as when Obi-wan had him do the same exercise but completely blind.
The remotes are set to low power, so it'll just sting if they do get hit. Jacen mutters to Jaina that this should be better than when the Shadow Academy threw rocks and knives at them.
The exercise begins. Jacen and Lowie get stung in the first shots. Tenel Ka immediately starts dodging, and Jaina successfully parries a flurry of bolts. Tenel Ka's not just using the Force, but also ridiculously well-honed training and instincts: by listening carefully she figures out where her remote is and destroys it. Luke ends the exercise and praises Tenel Ka for using all available skills.
They set up to learn a bit about melee combat. Jaina and Lowie are facing off first; Jaina expresses some discomfort with fighting Lowie and she sees that Lowie's feeling uncertain too, but Luke says it's okay. They aren't fighting, they're fencing. The purpose is to test each other, learn to gauge each other's skills and reactions, and to explore strategies. Jaina's reminded again of the Shadow Academy. She's particularly uncertain because the Shadow Academy tricked the twins into fighting each other in holographic disguises.
Luke reminds them that Jedi fight as a last resort.
He notes that circumstances don't always pit people against equal opponents. And, well, Lowie's much taller and three times stronger than Jaina. He has a huge reach advantage. Luke figures in terms of kill, Jaina and Lowie are equal, though. He warns Lowie not to underestimate Jaina, either.
The two lock blades experimentally, and then slowly start getting into the swing of a duel, with Jaina providing commentary along the way -- "What are we waiting for," "All right, let's try something else," and "This isn't so bad." That sort of thing.
It starts getting into a good duel, and they're kind of excited. Narrative goes on about how Jaina feels the Force flowing through her~ and she shows off by Force-leaping over a horizontal sweep and over the wookie's head, landing behind him. She gets some praise, and Lowie gives her a salute with his saber. Now it's Jacen and Tenel Ka's turn.
They also start out hesitantly, but Jacen has a crush on Tenel Ka so he starts cracking jokes and posturing because he wants to impress her. Good against remotes isn't the same as good against a real opponent, and he'll take it easy on her, blah blah. She says she'll try not to be too hard on him.
Luke: Be careful. Don't get cocky. You both have a great deal to learn.
Jacen: Don't worry, Uncle Luke. I know it was a bad time for me, but I did have some training at the Shadow Academy. Fighting Tenel Ka will be more of a challenge than battling holographic monsters, though.
Jaina: [clearing her throat] And better than fighting your own sister in disguise?
Jacen: That too.
They start out slowly, testing their blades against each other. They get competitive very quickly, giving verbal jabs and the duel quickly escalating. Tenel Ka shows him up briefly and decides to show off by switching hands she's wielding the saber with. He tries it, too. She's really proud because she's great due to her honed fighting skill, not because she built a good weapon -- except a Jedi's saber is supposed to be an extension of themselves so the narrative is going to call her prideful and teach her a "lesson" about how a Jedi has trust and use the Force, not just muscle. So as Jacen and Tenel Ka push harder against each other, her shoddily-constructed saber starts malfunctioning and eventually fails while the two have their sabers locked and straining against each other. No longer having something to push against, Jacen finds himself cutting her arm off.
Tenel Ka's saber has overloaded, and is sparking and smoking in the severed arm's hand. And then it blows up, mangling the arm so that it can't just be reattached. She passes out while everyone rushes over to her.

Luke: "I don't want anyone getting too enthusiastic and causing injuries instead of just deflecting laser bolts. . . I wasn't kidding. A lightsaber can cut through practically any substance known-and that includes people. Remember this warning: lightsabers are not toys. They are dangerous weapons. Treat them with the utmost care and respect. I hope that the time you each spent building your lightsaber has taught you more about its power and its risks."

Luke reminds them that Jedi fight as a last resort.
Luke: Remember, a Jedi fights only as a last resort. If you are forced to draw your lightsaber, you have already forfeited much of our advantage. A Jedi trusts the Force and at first seeks other ways to resolve problems: patience, logic, tolerance, attentive listening, negotiation, persuasion, calming techniques.
But there are times when a Jedi must fight. . .
