Jaina's in a Galactic Alliance Guard uniform as a disguise, rushing through the GAG flagship Star Destroyer Anakin Solo to kill her twin and hopefully rescue Hapan Prince Isolder. We join her rushing through turbo lifts and catwalks. Noticing fear in the force, she checks in a room in the infirmary area she's in -- there's a Falleen bandaging a dismembered Bothan, guarded by two armored escorts. Definitely the victim of lightsaber attacks. One of the guards notices Jaina, and explains the Bothans have been sending assassin after assassin after Caedus; the Sith just cuts them up and sends them there. Jaina asks why the ship's gone quiet -- they should be in the middle of a space battle. The update is grim for her, good for the Alliance, as the guard answers the Hapan fleet is retreating. The other guard calls Caedus "Darth Maniac," and reveals he's in a med bay scanning booth. He'd brought a body, so he might be going from there to a disposal area.
So Isolder's probably dead, too.
Jaina heads that way, trying not to imagine what her twin must have done, and trying to shut down her presence in the Force. Turns out there's five guards taking a hover gurney to another lift. She sneaks, and runs across a medical droid. She questions it, confirms the body would have been Isolder. Caedus snapped three of his cervical vertebrae.
Jaina: The prisoner's neck -- how do you know it was Lord Caedus who snapped it?
Droid: It always is, Captain.
There's a ship wide comm announcement. The ship will be jumping to its final objective in five minutes. That'd be Shedu Maad, the Jedi base. Last chance to keep Caedus from wiping out the Jedi and conquering the galaxy. One more lift, and she's stepping into a corridor with four of Caedus' men. She throws herself out of the lift, shrieking and pointing the guards back behind her, claiming there's more Bothan assassins. They rush in front of her -- and she cuts them all in half from behind with a slash.
She's approaching the door to the disposal bay itself, and the door opens, with Caedus distracted talking into a commlink, ordering his X-wing prepped. He's only got one arm, and he has just enough time to recognize her and say her name out loud before she runs him through. Caedus immediately shoves her across the room with telekinesis, and the fight's on. Some of the medical work done fixing Jaina's broken ribs from their last fight pops.
He directs lightning at her, and she blocks it with her saber, and answers with a Force throw of her own. A droid starts complaining about them disrupting its work area. Sabers clash, and she kicks him above the waist, before she takes a kick in her injured ribs. It turns into a fast exchange, sabers not accomplishing anything, but Caedus landing more kicks and elbow strikes. She takes a quick glance around to find some environmental feature to turn to her advantage, and he takes the opportunity to smash the pommel of his weapon into her cheekbone. She lashes back, but only lands a knee on his thigh.
Then she backs off and throws that complaining droid at Caedus, who staggers; she presses the advantage, trying a lunge and getting a kick in the stomach for her trouble. But she manages to throw him down on a conveyor belt and smashing down into a crate. He easily bounces back up, with a dozen used syringes hanging from his shoulder and face. The needles are completely buried. He continues to not seem to notice his pain.
The saber flurry begins again, and Jaina accidentally decapitates the droid as they go at it. She snaps a kick up into Caedus's chin. He drops his saber as he reels and she tries to snag it for an advantage, but it's a trap; he telekinetically reactivates it and she barely pulls her arm back in time to keep from losing it. She assumes a guard position.
Caedus deactivates the blade, and she finally feels him again in the Force. The only thing keeping the Sith on his feet is a boatload of Force energy. Her twin appeals to her to get out of his way -- he claims to be trying to save Tenel Ka and Allana. She scoffs, and tries searching with her Force senses for why he's stalling when his body won't be able to keep going too much longer. She accuses him of wanting to save them the way he saved Isolder.
He puts his saber away, saying Isolder made the same choice he did. She thinks the gesture might have meant something if he wasn't "a lying Sith murderer."
Caedus: Jaina, we don't have time for this.
Jaina: So die already.
Force-assisted flip in the air, and she brings her saber down in a killing blow. . . and Caedus doesn't even try to get his saber back in the way. He tries telekinetically throwing her into an incineration chamber while she's in the air, with her barely saving herself by altering her trajectory. She gets badly burned when she slams into a sizzling metal wall anyway.
Jaina pulls all the power she can into herself, thinking of her twin when he was a teenage clown and the compassionate hero of the Vong war. Her pain is lost in it, and she rises in time to see him pulling the syringes out of his face and heading out the door. She Force-pushes the control pad to slam the door in his face, leaps and blocks one more blast of lightning. He slashes with his saber again, a kick at her throat -- she blocks, it breaks her forearm, and they just continue tearing into each other. He slashes the muscles of her abdomen, she cuts his ankle's tendon. She presses with one more leap, and with only one good arm and one good leg left, he doesn't try to stop the killing blow. Caedus just stares at the ceiling, and she feels him sending something in the Force even as her blade cuts into him.
Jaina immediately falls apart with grief and pain. She drops to the floor, pulls his head into his lap, and remembering a little something he told her a long time ago, is just thinking over and over that he isn't really dead. He's in her heart, she can feel their twin bond again.
She'd out of it for the rest of the battle. Without Caedus eventually the Jedi and Hapans win, and boyfriend Jagged Fel comes rushing into the room, shouting to allies that he's found her and to hurry. Jaina is confused. Jag comes to to pull Jacen away, and she instinctively uses telekinesis to throw him across the room, trying to say "don't touch him," but really just screaming unintelligibly. Jag is persistent, picking himself back up and coming over, approaching more slowly this time and intelligently not trying to take her twin away this time. He kneels by her and gives her a shot in the arm, holds her hand and promises help is on the way and she'll be fine. Her head starts to clear. She tells him to go find Zekk instead of staying with her. No, don't wait for medics to arrive, go. She felt that his fighter got shot down, but he's only missing, not dead.
Jag: Oh. We'll find him. Don't worry.
Jaina: Have to worry.
Jag: I'll make sure Master Skywalker knows, too. We will find him.
Jaina: Thanks.
Jag: Thanks aren't necessary. Zekk is a good man.
Jaina: Not for Zekk. For getting here first. Glad it was you.
Jag: Me, too. But hold on. Help is coming.
Jaina: Second thing -- Mirta Gev.
Jag: Yes?
Jaina: Upstairs. Alive. Get her -- out.
Jag: I'll make sure.
Jaina: Not someone slow. She has -- blaster rifles.
[Her parents are arriving on the scene. They're both putting on brave faces, Han trying to look cocky and Leia trying to look perfectly calm and composed.]
Han: No surprise there. She's Mandalorian, right?
The parents, coming closer, see Jacen's head in her lap, and finally break down, kneeling with her and trying not to look at their son. Talking is done. Han and Leia start administering first aid, and they try to comfort her with comforting squeezes where she isn't injured.

Jaina's pain-clouded mind did not understand how he could take a lightsaber through the gut and do that. Why didn't Caedus just lie down and die like most people? Didn't he understand she was trying to do him a favor?
He directs lightning at her, and she blocks it with her saber, and answers with a Force throw of her own. A droid starts complaining about them disrupting its work area. Jaina felt something in the Force, too-something that made her pulse stop and her chest sink and her blood freeze in her veins. Her brother was reaching out to Tenel Ka, screaming at her through the Force, warning her there was danger, urging her to take Allana and --
Then the blade reached Caedus's heart, and he dropped at her feet, and Jaina felt nothing at all.
Jaina immediately falls apart with grief and pain. She drops to the floor, pulls his head into his lap, and remembering a little something he told her a long time ago, is just thinking over and over that he isn't really dead. He's in her heart, she can feel their twin bond again.

On some level, Jaina knew, they were probably trying to reassure her, to let her know that nothing had changed between them. But that was impossible, of course. Jaina had become the Sword of the Jedi, with everything that meant.
Always you shall be in the front rank, a burning brand to your enemies, a brilliant fire to your friends. Yours is a restless life, and never shall you know peace, though you shall be blessed for the peace that you bring others. Take comfort in the fact that, though you stand tall and alone, others will take shelter in the shadow that you cast.
