Memory 77
Memory: Holodisguise sparring with Jacen.
Received: Day 293, night
Form: Sparkling pumpkin hand mirror. Four uses.
Summary: While kidnapped by the Shadow Academy, Brakiss coerces the Solo twins into unknowingly fighting each other with laser swords.
The kids are captive on the Shadow Academy, and have been separated. Jaina stands in a training room set up for holographic projections with the Dark Jedi training station's master, an attractive man named Brakiss. He's given her a lightsaber, but she just tries to push it back into his hands. She argues with him.
Jaina: I won't play your games.
Brakiss: We do not play at the Shadow Academy. But we do practice. Important training for a Jedi.
Jaina: Fighting stupid holographic monsters? I won't do it anymore. I've done too much for you already. You may as well just take us home, because we'll never serve your Shadow Academy.
Brakiss: Ah, but you're getting so good with the lightsaber. Try it one more time. I'll give you a worthy opponent, someone a bit more challenging to fight.
Jaina: Why should I? I don't owe you anything. I want to see my brother. I want to see Lowie.
Brakiss: You will see them soon enough.
Jaina: I won't fight unless you promise I can see them.
Brakiss: Very well. I promise to let you see each other again, during classes. But only if you agree not to cause more disturbances.
Jaina: Agreed.
Brakiss: Think of it this way -- the more training you undergo, the better chance you'll have if ever you fight against me. Consider it . . . training for your eventual escape, hmmm?
He informs her there will be one more change in the little training session: she will be shrouded in a holographic disguise as she fights. A three-dimensional mask, as the Empire anticipates sending Dark Jedi to perform infiltrations. He leaves, and the holographic costume activates; from Jaina's perspective, it's like shadows wrapping around her and blurring everything.
There's the sound of a wooden door opening, and Jaina rolls her eyes; she considers Brakiss' illusions corny, and feels nothing he's been throwing at her in this room a challenge. What's on her mind is figuring out how to crash the station's systems. But then she see's who's stepping through the doorway: Darth Vader. Her grandfather's reputation does make her nervous, and she senses dread, considering it may be her own (it is at least partly someone else's).
They begin to duel, and Jaina tries to focus on his chest armor, going for that respirator. But he's stronger, and she finds herself imagining she's fighting her antagonists at the Academy, Brakiss and Tamith Kai, until for a few dangerous moments she's drawing on her anger at them. They fight a long time, but it's coming to a stalemate. Brakiss apparently ends up impatient, and finally tells them to stop over an intercom.
The holographic projectors shut down, and she finds herself with her saber still crossed with someone else's: Jacen. They give surprised cries and spring apart, not wanting to hurt each other.
