Memory 82
Memory: The aftermath of Mara Jade's death.
Received: Late on Day 311
Form: Does not appear to have been specified.
Summary: Jaina's aunt and mentor has died. Jaina goes to be with Luke during the initial onset of grief.
--
All the Jedi sense Master Mara Jade's death in the Force, and Jaina knows Luke will be suffering. She gets her crying out before going to see him. They're with Tenel Ka's Hapan entourage, and the queen goes with Jaina. Tenel Ka has to try getting Luke's attention multiple times before he pays attention. Tenel Ka announces she's deployed Hapan forces to search the sector for Mara's killer.
Jaina doesn't say anything at first, just dropping down to cuddle Luke. Eventually he strokes her hair and they talk about how they don't know where Ben is and can't sense him. Tenel Ka mentions that Jacen was around earlier, immediately putting Jaina on edge. She wants more information. Did the Hapan fleet log his ship's movements? Publicly, Jacen is gone and "busy" with Galactic Alliance Guard business, and neither she nor Luke particularly buy into it. Tenel Ka goes to order a captain to gather the intelligence.
Luke: Don't say it.
Jaina: He's a total stranger. There. I had to, or else I'll have an aneurysm trying to stifle the urge to punch him out when he finally bothers to show up.
Leia and Han finally return a call from Luke, and more condolences are expressed. Once they hang up, Luke's thoughts turn to wondering what the last thing he talked to Mara about was -- that's when Jaina speaks up with a similar thought. She nearly cries again.
Jaina: You know pretty well the last thing Mara and I talked about? Nothing important, like how much I loved her and what she'd done for me. Just how much energy I waste in stupid games with Zekk and Jag, like a dumb sulky teenager.
Luke: Don't do this to yourself.
Jaina: Takes . . . this to make me grow up. Everything's changed now.
Luke: I know. I know.
Jaina: It's Lumiya.
Luke: We don't know that.
Jaina: You're reasonable to the last, aren't you, Uncle Luke?
Luke: None of us is thinking straight at the moment. Why don't you call . . . Zekk? Jag? They need to know, too.
Jaina: I'll inform them, but I'm done with all that personal stuff. I'm going to concentrate on one thing, and that's making Lumiya pay. If I'm supposed to be the Sword of the Jedi, then it's time I took it seriously, and there's nothing that's worth my time more than this.
The Hapan captain enters with a data pad of the information they'd asked for. Jaina takes it first and reviews the information, then gives Luke a Look. According to the records, Jacen comes and goes, Mara comes in an X-wing registered Five-Alpha, asks the Hapans to keep an eye out for a ship matching the description of a Sith ship Jaina's been hunting, and goes. Finding Five-Alpha means finding Mara's body, assuming her body hasn't disappeared into the Force. Luke tells her to leave this to him; Mara was his wife, so he insists he handle it himself. He snaps at her in doing so, though he didn't realize he was being so emotional, and it makes Jaina flinch. She promises she'll let it go, but if he needs her, she'll be there for him.
For the near future Jacen remains conspicuously off the charts. Ben is too, but everyone feels the kid is the one with an actual reason. The search for Five-Alpha resumes in the morning -- and Jaina is relegated to resuming the hunt for dark Jedi Alema Rar. She, Zekk and Jag will miss Mara's funeral as a result.
It's depressing, and Jaina gains +5 drive to be a rigid weapon for Good, with eyes only for the mission.
