Memory 83
Memory: Jagged Fel encourages Jaina to delegate, with mixed results.
Received: Late on Day 317, night
Form: An hourglass. 3 uses.
Summary: Much exasperation, Jaina throws her not!boyfriend into a wall, and this naturally leads into trouncing him at gambling followed by private intimate time.
--
We're back in the Yuuzhan Vong war, with Jaina in charge of Twin Suns squadron and posted on the Starsider. She's talking with Jacen about an upcoming operation, telling him Admiral Kre'fey would be glad to give him a squadron to work with, too. Jacen doesn't want one, and she's exasperated because through the entire war he's flip-flopping around about who he's going to be and what he's doing. Jacen declares he can pilot and fight well, but he's not great at military procedure and tactics. He's not ready to take responsibility for eleven other people.
Jaina can swallow that better than his flip-flopping, but she's embarrassed about her assumption. Jacen says he wants to fly with her, especially at Ylesia. They speculate whether Kyp Durron has another secret agenda in getting the military to go along with his plans, and Jaina figures he's finally gotten over that habit. Now she's worried about Jacen's plans -- capturing the Brigader leadership instead of engaging them normally has a lot that could go wrong when they're in a tenuous tactical position. Ideally, they'd have a more seasoned force and better intelligence before planning something bigger than a hit-and-run. Jacen doesn't have a good answer to that.
Eventually he breaks the silence by pointing out the tension between Jaina and Kyp. She flushes and calls it Kyp being "sentimental" with her. Jacen thinks he's too old for her, and she declares she's grateful he helped her come back from her brush with the dark side. They reach Jaina's cabin, and he says it's good that it's not romantic interest, because she's conquering far too many hearts since he's been gone. Jaina's irritated and just goes into her room.
Where suddenly she's grabbed.
She recognizes the scent, and she's being kissed, and then she THROWS THE IDIOT WHO WOULD SURPRISE HER LIKE THIS ACROSS THE ROOM. When she turns on the lights, it's Jagged Fel, recovering from the throw. He wants to know if she couldn't have just slapped him. She's mad at him for the trick, especially when he tries joking he was conducting an experiment.
Jag: I detected a degree of ambiguity in your last few messages," he said. "I could no longer tell what your feelings toward me might be, so I thought an experiment was in order. I decided to place you in a situation that wasn't the least bit ambiguous, and see how you reacted. And the experiment was a success.
Jaina: Right. You got thrown into the wall.
Jag: But before you remembered to be outraged, there was a moment that was worth all the pain.
They remember Jacen's at the doorway, who asks Jaina nonchalantly if she needs rescuing. She dismisses him and Jag sketches a little salute. Once they're alone again Jag asks if he can stand up or if she'd just knock him down again. She challenges him to try it and see, so he decides not to get up. She leans against a wall as far from him as she can get as they talk.
Jag's been involved in the Imperial Remnant's campaign against the Vong in the Hydian Way, and he recently saw her parents out there working on restoring routes between what's left of the New Republic systems. He acknowledges it's important work, and she answers with sarcasm -- she knows exactly what the work means. So why'd he leave his important work?
Seeing Jaina is nice, but he's also to get his squadron some maintenance and it's difficult to find facilities suited for Chiss clawcraft. But Admiral Kre'fey's fleet has just the things they need. It's a "lucky coincidence."
They catch up a bit, with Jaina relaxing. She's got six rookie pilots and she's worried about them for the upcoming operation. He asks if she was going to be taking them out on a training exercise immediately, and she admits she wasn't. But she has a ton of administrative work, and --
Jag: Jaina. Please allow me to observe, one officer to another, that it is not necessary to do all the work yourself. You absolutely must learn to delegate. You have two capable, veteran lieutenants in Lowbacca and Tesar Sebatyne, and not only will it aid you if you share the work with them, it will aid their development as officers.
Jaina: So it's to the benefit of my officers and pilots to spend the evening in my cabin alone with you?
Jag: Precisely.
She decides instead they're going down to the wardroom for some sabacc. She played his little game, now he has to play hers. He notes that if she decided to do something now, he'd be powerless to stop her, and after considering him a few moments she gives him a kiss.
Then she promptly marches him down to play sabacc and skins him of all of his money. Only then does she take him back into private for some more intimate time, the scene ending with a little banter:
Jaina: Just one thing.
Jag: What's that?
Jaina: I think you're right about my not doing all the work. I intend to delegate a fair share to you.
Jag: Very good, Major.
Jaina: I hope this will contribute to your development as an officer.
