Memory 27
Memory: The first duel with Caedus.
Received: Day 125
Form: bite-sized fruit tart
Summary: Jaina fails to kill Caedus, but succeeds in cutting off an arm, as well as almost cutting off a leg. He fries her pretty good with lightning, gives her a concussion, acid burns over her face and throat, shrapnel in her legs, and four broken ribs. She knew her first attempt failed due to an earlier memory regain, but that's different than getting back the attempt itself; for those that know her, she is dropping all projects to go be traumatized for a while.

The Mandalorian strike team is determined to carry out a bounty hunting contract against the Imperial Moffs that Caedus has under guard on his complex. Jaina is reminded by them to be ruthless, and by her judgment she'll die if she goes for a straight-up battle. So she goes to set up an ambush for Caedus, knowing he'll come to destroy the Mandalorian strike team when they attack the Moffs. Jaina is still disconnecting herself from the Force so Caedus can't sense her approach.
So she has one of the native Verpine (insect race just subjugated by Caedus) call the guard out of a booth overlooking the Moffs' room. After she explains the Verpine and Jedi don't need a mutual aid treaty to do things that will help each other, the Verpine takes it very literally even though she wanted him to create a distraction so she could sneak in; the bug actually tells the guard there's a security breach, tells him he thinks it's a Jedi and points the guard in her direction. Jaina has to shoot him point-blank with her sniper rifle, which uses a magazine clip with one hundred actual projectiles instead of lasers, since attacking a Jedi with a laser is always a bad idea.
A technician inside the booth comes to investigate the commotion; Jaina leaps across the room to knock her out with a blow to the head. The technician gets a blaster bolt off, which ricochets around the booth. Jaina starts setting up to snipe; there's twenty Moffs in the room below, with a detail of stormtroopers standing guard. The technician's superior calls, and we get a scene with Jaina trying to impersonate the technician reminiscent of the scene where Han tries to pretend to be a stormtrooper in the original Star Wars movie. She takes a stab at the communications protocol and gets a detail wrong. The officer on the other end automatically sounds suspicious and wraps the conversation up. She seals the booth to hold off any security sent to investigate -- and the Mandalorian attack on the Moffs begins.
The Mandalorians are doing good, but taking some losses in the firefight. Jaina knows she can make their fight easier, but holds back for Caedus' arrival. There's only five Mandalorians left; Caedus arrives in time to keep the Mandalorians from turning the tide of battle with a cluster of grenades; he grabs the grenades in the Force and drops it in a safe place; he ignites his red lightsaber and starts deflecting blaster fire at the Mandalorians. Jaina sets up to snipe him, and observes his yellow eyes. Since he's a Jedi, she's having a hard time keeping the sights lined up on him, since he's dancing around a lot. You know, agile like a Jedi tends to be.
Mirta, Boba Fett's granddaughter, keeps killing Moffs, so draws Caedus' first attack. Caedus uses the Force to throw her, breaking her back. She's not moving anymore, and Jaina and the Mandalorians think she's dead. Jaina lines up a headshot when Caedus goes in to kick another Mandalorian Jaina feels attached to -- Roegr. Unfortunately, a stormtrooper happens to step into the shot and dies instead. Caedus is caught up with the body for a moment, and while Jaina's preparing another shot, Roegr goes in with a lightsaber-resistant sword. Jaina tries to track her target; Jacen makes a few scratches in Roegr's armor, figures out he's not going to cut him that way, so proceeds to hit the armor with the shatterpoint technique, which just causes it to crumble. She recognizes it from studying historical archives -- she knows Caedus is the first since Mace Windu to master the technique. Since he's finally stopped moving enough for a shot, she sets her sights on his head, and proceeds to let off three shots, just as Caedus delivers the killing blow to Roegr. Roegr's body falls into the way of the first shot, the second shot ends up catching Caedus in the shoulder, and the third misses entirely.
The force of the shot sends Caedus spinning; Jaina's trying a second burst of shots, but since she's not connected to the Force, she's not as precise as she should be; the Caedus/Roegr's body entanglement ends with Roegr's body taking the shots. The two fall backward over a row of seats. Caedus definitely knows there's a sniper in the projection booth now, so Jaina switches to full-auto fire and starts spraying fire where Caedus should be, on that old military fallback of "lay down enough fire and eventually you'll hit something." We get a note that while this is going on, the other three Mandalorians are continuing to kill Moffs and stormtroopers.
When her rifle's magazine runs empty, she ducks aside to reload, which was smart because Caedus shoots lightning at the position she'd been firing from. She rolls to a new firing position, and finds that Caedus is now busy defending himself from Mandalorian fire again. He's directed three troopers to stay out of the fight, taking cover and training weapons on Jaina's booth. Caedus gets distracted Force-choking a Mandalorian, and Jaina tries taking the opportunity to burn a opening in the booth to fire through with her lightsaber; the troopers spot it and start firing, but aren't sharpshooters and can't hit through the small opening she just made.
Only a Mandalorian Jaina knows as Vatok is left standing. She writes him off as a dead man, aims at Caedus, and fires; Caedus expects it and dodges, engaging Vatok in a melee and using the Mandalorian as cover against Jaina. Jaina asks herself: What Would Boba Fett Do? She starts firing into the melee, doing her best to shoot past Vatok and into Caedus, but without revealing herself in the Force, all she's managing is to ricochet bullets off the Mandalorian's armor or miss them both. Jaina's pretty sure the only reason Caedus doesn't kill Vatok outright is so he can keep using him as cover against the sniper -- he even starts maneuvering Vatok directly into the path of bullets. Soon, she runs empty again; she's now fired two hundred shots at Caedus and succeeded in hitting him once because GOD IT'S POINTLESS TO SHOOT AT JEDI. Finally, Caedus kills Vatok. She retreats into the booth to reload again.
Caedus has other plans. He deactivates his lightsaber since the Mandalorians are all down. The stormtroopers try to launch thermal detonators into the booth; Jaina finally reconnects to the Force, grabbing them and throwing them back at their sources. NOTE: at this point, Luke Skywalker starts projecting an illusion of himself over her, and lending her a power boost. Jaina is unaware of Luke's plan to do this.
Caedus halts the grenades she threw back in mid-air and they end up just causing property damage. He directs the troopers to take the Moffs out of the room, saying he'll deal with the sniper himself. The moffs think this is silly, since Caedus is injured, but he dismisses them. Jaina uses the time they spend arguing to prepare to shoot him again; Caedus grabs the sniper rifle telekinetically and Jaina immediately releases it, igniting her lightsaber as he leaps up to engage her in a duel. Before he's even landed, Jaina's trying to cut off his head and kicking him -- she does a lot of launching two attacks throughout the fight, on the correct theory that he'll fail to block one of them. The kick lands. They hit each other a few times, and he ends up stumbling back, and hesitating because he sees the wrathful image of Luke instead of Jaina.
She doesn't try to take tactical positions; she's gunning for pure ruthlessness now, just throwing everything she can at him. They have a fast exchange of saber attacks as they exit the booth and enter the room proper. He moves to shoot her with a hidden poison dart launcher, and she just hits him with a hammer of telekinesis, blowing him through some furniture. He recovers in time to parry her coup de grace. She dodges as he finally fires his poison dart. He throws a Mandalorian body at her. She plays possum under him.
So he throws a grenade at her. We get a note that Jaina's now suffering a concussion and has blood getting in her eyes. Again, she throws the grenade back, then makes the cold decision to use Vatok's body to shield herself from the explosion; she still takes some shrapnel in her legs. She pilfer's Vatok's lightsaber-resistant sword, and goes on the attack. They wire-fu. She cuts off his arm, and feels bad because she hears Jacen scream as the limb falls onto her boots. He...flaps his stump at her, splashing her with blood that burns the skin of her face and throat like acid.
Part of her is traumatized and wants to shut down. The other part keeps her on the attack because she'll be killed if she freezes up. On another dual attack, he blocks the lightsaber but she starts to chop off his leg -- only to have the attack interrupted by a blast of Force lightning throwing her across the room, slamming her into a wall, breaking four ribs and leaving her unable to breath properly. Luke's illusion fails; she's fallen and having trouble getting back up, and Caedus has slumped to the floor, bleeding. He gasps her name, obviously confused to see that it's her. Her vision's blurred, but she snarks at him -- again, she doesn't know that he's been seeing Luke attacking him this whole time.
"I haven't changed that much, Jacen. And I hope you know how much this Sith nonsense is steaming Mom and Dad."
Caedus dismisses her, trying to find Luke in the room. She throws aside Vatok's blade, and telekinetically grabs one of the dead stormtrooper's blaster rifle. Sensing reinforcing troopers arriving, she starts shooting at them, begins her retreat, and eventually drops the rifle in favor of deflecting return fire at Caedus.
Luke's power boost leaves her. She's so close to incapacitated now that she can barely maintain her defense; as she continues to retreat, she starts tripping over debris that she normally would've sensed without needing to see it. Caedus starts ordering the troopers to fire at random spots where there's nothing -- Jaina's concussed and doesn't realize it, but this is because Luke has re-established his illusion as a diversion for Jaina's retreat. Instead, she just thinks he's gone bonkers. She tries to decide whether she should sacrifice herself trying to finish killing Caedus while he's wounded, weak, and apparently hallucinating, and starts to go back into the fight -- but then that Verpine from the start of the memory catches her attention, giving her directions to an extraction point. The bug offers to carry her off because she's clearly "too damaged to fight." She protests, but gives in when she feels her mother reaching out to her in the Force, conveying both worry and the fact that Jaina's family has put themselves into more danger waiting to extract her; Jaina remembers that she promised the Council she'd obey orders, and finally starts stumbling to the extraction.
From there on, concussion muddles this memory; she vaguely remembers a fighting retreat with stormtroopers on her tail, finally arriving in a hangar where her boyfriends Jag and Zekk are waiting with her mom, dad, Luke, Saba, and a few other Jedi. She gets hustled onto the blastboat, and has a stark mental image of her dad constantly looking away from his piloting to watch her, worried.
