Jaina Solo
19 June 2013 @ 03:45 am
Memory: Field trip to Gem Diver Station!
Received: Day 258, late evening
Form: Small, capped horns of mead, only two mouthfuls. Two uses.
Summary: Young Solo twins and their wookie pal get to go to Lando Calrissian's latest money-making scheme and play with the equipment. Naturally, this is highly exciting for them and extremely nerve-racking for Lando.

Put it in your boot. You know you never lose things there. )

27 May 2013 @ 01:30 pm
Memory: As a starfighter pilot, getting shot down.
Received: Day 251
Form: A brightly-colored party cracker; two people can pull on it, resulting in a shared memory.
Summary: So the opening of Balance Point is literally Jaina getting blown up. I misremembered how this passage wrapped up when I put it in the registry, since getting shot isn't actually what takes her out of the fight.

Jaina's X-wing has been destroyed in a firefight. She had to go EV. A fellow pilot brought her in. . .Her pressure suit held, but she was close to an attack cruiser, one of ours, when the drive blew. She got a massive mag-field exposure. )

Memory: Wedge and Tycho hit the Vong with the Empire. "They're not going to like the Empire."
Received: Day 246, night
Form: Two palm-sized lion statues in a team-colored bag. Break the statue to receive; two uses.
Summary: Rogue Squadron's Wedge and Tycho are managing a ragtag fleet and group of ground forces at Borleias in a campaign to hold the system against a Yuuzhan Vong invasion. The two have decided the reason the New Republic is currently doing poorly against the invaders is because the republic's not only been divided in leadership, but also extremely predictable in military maneuvers. So they're switching up strategic styles throughout the campaign. Instead of fighting like the New Republic, they've gone to fighting like the Rebel Alliance.

Forty-eight days in, they've decided to switch it up and handle things the way the Empire would. This is the story of Operation Emperor's Hammer.

'We're going to face them with an enemy they've never had the displeasure of fighting. We're going to hit them with the Empire.' 'They're not going to like the Empire.' )

Memory: Lightsaber training gone wrong.
Received: Day 242, evening
Form: A bunch of ripe cherries. 2/3
Summary: The first afternoon of live saber training and someone gets an arm chopped off and blown up. I suppose that's better than it could have gone.

Remember this warning: lightsabers are not toys. They are dangerous weapons. Treat them with the utmost care and respect. I hope that the time you each spent building your lightsaber has taught you more about its power and its risks. )

21 April 2013 @ 03:30 am
Memory: Early temple reconstruction and reminiscing with Zekk.
Received: Day 240, after "tea time."
Form: Tea cookies. 3/4
Summary: Jaina and Zekk bond again as recovery and repair from them being on opposite sides of a conflict gets well under way. And they do so by revisiting a mutual love of impromptu skinnydipping possibly in inappropriate places.

I wish we could be like that again, back in those days, without everything that happened… )

19 April 2013 @ 03:16 am
Memory: Courtmartialed by Jacen.
Received: Day 239, evening (taken the next day)
Form: Ruby-colored crystal, shattered to take.
Summary: Jacen is becoming a little tyrant, and gets Jaina suspended for not destroying a vessel that probes a military blockade but retreats. Afterward Luke and Jaina have a talk about how they both Know For Absolute Certain Jacen has gone to the dark side, but we're only two books into a 9-book storyline so the authors can't have them go do anything about it; instead they go home to mope about it.

I didn't think it was . . . appropriate to continue attacking a civilian vessel when it was retreating. )

Received: Day 233, late evening
Form: Small hand mirrors with a dark gray casing. Viewable up to 7 times.
Summary: The kids destroy a weapons depot full of terrible biological weapons, and stop a bunch of people who just want to Kill All Humans.

'Hey, how many thermal detonators does it take to blow up an Imperial weapons depot?' 'The answer is obvious . . . All of them, of course. )

Memory: Meeting Jagged Fel.
Received: Day 230, afternoon
Form: Memories take the form of a box of three christmas crackers! Pop a cracker to receive a memory.

14 March 2013 @ 12:33 pm
Memory: Jaina and Zekk, stuck in Joiner hive mind mode, invite Jagged Fel to go out with them.
Received: Day 229, late morning
Form: One fake diamond half. Must be broken to view memory. This will be surprisingly easy due to UNICORN MAGIC.
Summary: Epilogue of the first Chiss/Killik conflict. Jaina and Zekk would like that dreamy Jag Fel to hang out with them but he's just not into hive mind polyamory.

Both of you? )

23 February 2013 @ 06:07 pm
Memory: Han teaches the young Solo kids about the Corellian system.
Received: Day 222, night
Form: Comes in the form of a HI, MY NAME IS _______ sticker. Shareable, but it eventually starts to lose its stickiness . . .
Summary: The Solo kids learn about the Corellian side of their heritage. Oh no the kids are an excuse for an exposition dump.

If I'm a Corellian, and you're my children, that makes you Corellians. So listen very carefully, and don't make any mistakes, or you'll make me look bad. All right? )

15 February 2013 @ 07:17 pm
Memory: Blind!Jaina, pacifist!Jacen and the Vong invasion of Duro.
Received: Day 219, night
Form: Memories come in the form of fiery butterflies in small glass boxes. Open the box and you'll receive the memory; the butterfly will fly out and disappear.
Summary: The Yuuzhan Vong take the polluted planet Duro, which New Republic war relief efforts had been routing refugees to. The Solo-Skywalker family does what it can to save who they can, but even Jedi can only do so much; in this we see that a series named "Star Wars" remains about war even when your main characters aren't combat-capable and/or willing.

Poor mom. She's got a half-blind, stubborn daughter who can't fight anymore and a son who's afraid to be a Jedi. Good thing Anakin came along. )

Memory: The Apprentice.
Received: Day 212, night
Form: Two cookies, both obviously shaped like a girl. One is burned and one is not. Shareable, two uses.
Summary: Jaina, in her Vong war slip to the dark side, coerces Kyp Durron into teaching her how to wipe minds, and she sneaks about to use a mad scientist to work on her Trickster plans against the Vong.

What's the matter? Not the sort of lessons you had in mind? )

Memory: Captain of the Rock Dragon.
Received: Day 212, morning
Form: Tiny, sharp ax. Cut yourself to receive the memory. Three uses.
Summary: The Young Jedi Knights work on fixing up Lowbacca's little flyer when Tenel Ka's family brings in a present: a souped-up little clunker for the Hapan princess to cruise around in. Jaina's jealous because she's the pilot geek of the group, but her parents won't give her a spaceship. Tenel Ka is a bro and lets Jaina take over the ship. (She doesn't call Jaina captain here, but she does in later scenes.)

'I think you've got yourself a crew.' )

Memory: The final showdown of the Yuuzhan Vong war.
Received: Day 205, late afternoon
Form: Memories come in the form of Springerle cookies. Five cookies; five uses.
Summary: The climactic battle of the Yuuzhan Vong War. She, Jacen and Luke party up and do a boss raid. Jacen is a magical unicorn for once in his life. (The part where the surviving Vong wander off on a special planet and live happily ever after will come later. Because good god this isn't even the majority of the book and it's still a huge writeup.)

I'm grateful you elected to pursue me, Yun-Harla. At last we have an opportunity to meet on a level battlefield. )

Memory: Versus: gun-toting dinosaurs.
Received: Day 204, late afternoon
Form: Memories are in the form of little teddybear head-shaped wagashi in your team's color. Awwww. I'm sure their beady little candy eyes won't stare at you judgingly all.
Summary: The meat of the plot of Force Heretics II: Refugees. Jaina and friends thwart an evil plot by soul-stealing dinosaurs.

You heard me.

I'm just doing my job. You know what Jedi are like: we're always getting in the way. )

Received: Day 202, night

Summary: Luke's Jedi Academy and Brakiss' terrible Shadow Academy square off. Lots of teens fighting each other, but Jaina being Jaina, she steals an enemy fighter and handles things in space before confronting Zekk on the steps of the academy itself.

This isn't a broken machine you can tinker with and fix. )

17 November 2012 @ 10:54 pm
Memory: Young Jaina thinks she can wake up comatose Uncle Luke by kissing him, as if he's Sleeping Beauty.
Received: Day 194, afternoon
Form: Smal clay jar, to be dropped and shattered.
Summary: Kyp Durron put Luke in a coma. Tiny Jaina (like . . . under five years old) applies Disney logic and tries to be the Prince Charming to Luke's Disney princess. Author Kevin J. Anderson continues a proud tradition of Luke getting smooched by relatives.

Maybe if I give him a kiss. )

11 November 2012 @ 09:11 pm
Memory: The wondertwins are too much for Chewbacca and Threepio to babysit.
Received: Day 192, dinnertime
Form: Memories come in the form of four little breadcrumbs--well, pieces of bread anyway. They're about the size of your thumb and come inside a bag of your team color. 3/4 uses. (Also: earned a stuffed yugioh hero doll wearing dragon wings...)
Summary: Tiny Jacen and Jaina escape their babysitters and get lost in the undercity of Coruscant. The twins use children's story logic to find their way home.

Chewbacca bellowed; Threepio called after the children, but Jacen and Jaina met up outside the dioramas, pleased with their escape and giggling. )

Memory: Young Solo twins turn Threepio into a snowman.
Received: Day 189, morning
Form: Noisemaker that says "WINNER!!!" and sprays confetti when blown. Three total uses. (Also: earned a cereal bowl-sized teacup with tickets.)
Summary: What do you get when you take two mischievous kids with a special Force bond to play in the snow, and a babysitter that can't handle a couple of little tornados? Yep.

Afterward Threepio had stoically endured as the twins insisted on making a 'snow droid' of him, packing layers of snow around his shiny body. )
